A Note from Our District President

The High Holidays are already upon us. I hope that each of you had a relaxing and enriching summer and that you are prepared to greet 5775 with renewed energy and hope. There is lots of news to report from Central District and much to look forward to, especially our WRJ Central District Biennial Convention.

It is my sincere wish that the New Year brings each of you good health, happiness, peace, and fulfillment. May the warmth and comfort of sisterhood make all of these things even sweeter. May we go from strength to strength and remember that we truly are stronger together.

L'Shanah Tovah!

New this Year: Convention Tribute Book and Program

This year we are providing an opportunity to thank our sisterhood leadership for the work they have done and will do for us all by creating an ad for this beautiful book, which will be distributed at the convention. This is a great way to honor our sisterhood leaders, and especially those women who have led the Central District for the last two years and those who are ready to take over for the next two. Ads can also be written to brag about your own sisterhood, thank and/or recognize your sisterhood board and officers, send a shout-out to your Deborah Award honoree, promote your business, etc...

We encourage you to promote this effort through communication with your sisterhood board, temple board and rabbis, family and friends of our Central District WRJ Board or your local sisterhoods, and businesses in your area.

Download the form, p rint it out and/or email it on to anyone who has been impacted by your sisterhood's support or might find our membership the perfect audience for an ad. The help you give us in this effort will come back to benefit you through additional subsidies of future Biennial Conventions.

We hope you will be generous in your support of this project and pass the opportunity on!

Yes Fund Auction - We Need Your Sisterhood!

One of the highlights of the the convention will be a lively auction of Gift Baskets to raise money for WRJ's YES Fund (Youth, Education and Special Projects). The Board is asking that each sisterhood create a basket that will inspire others to contribute to the YES Fund.

When planning your basket, please keep in mind that the bidding will start at $36.00. Some suggestions are: Wine and Cheese Basket, Movie and Game Night Basket, Baby Basket, Yoga Basket - the combinations are endless! Your sisterhood can be as creative as you wish. Individuals are also welcome and encouraged to participate by creating a basket for the auction. We can't wait to see what you come up with!

So please, at your next meeting, if not before, designate someone in your sisterhood who will be responsible for creating this YES basket. Please let Marci Delson, our YES Fund Chair, know who is going to be working on this and how she can get in touch with her/them. In addition, please indicate a description and approximate retail value of the basket. Marci's email is marcildelson@gmail.com.

A Look Back at the Last Two Years in

WRJ Central District

November, 2012 was a special time for me. I was so excited to be the new president of WRJ Central District. It was a daunting thought, but I was waiting to see what would occur in the next two years.

There have been so many wonderful educational, spiritual, and social experiences for me in the last two years.

As I always have said, the best part of my presidency was visiting all of the sisterhoods and being with the women of our district. We have 34 sisterhoods at the present in our district. I was lucky enough to visit the following sisterhoods in Ohio: Temple Beth Tikvah, Worthington; Temple Beth Shalom, New Albany; Temple Israel, Columbus; Temple Beth Shalom, Hudson; Congregation Oheb Shalom, Sandusky; Temple Emanu El, Orange Village; The Temple Tifereth Israel, Beachwood; and my own congregation, Anshe Chesed Fairmount Temple, Beachwood; Temple Israel, Akron; and Rockdale Temple and Isaac M. Wise Temple in Cincinnati.

I was lucky to visit the following sisterhoods in Indiana: B'Nai Israel, Kokomo; Temple Israel, W. Lafayette.

In Knoxville Tennessee, I visited Temple Beth El.

In Kentucky I visited Temple Shalom in Louisville and visited with the women of Temple Adath Israel in Lexington.

In Michigan, I was happy to visit Temple Beth El, Bloomfield Hills, Temple Israel in W. Bloomfield; Congregation Shir Tikvah in Troy and Congregation Shaarey Zedek in East Lansing.

That makes an even 20 sisterhoods that I have visited. I really hope I will have the opportunity to visit the sisterhoods that I wasn't able to visit during my last two years sometime in the future.

Please invite me to a sisterhood service, installation or a special program that is exemplary of your sisterhood. And even more important, please request speakers for your sisterhood events from our speakers bureau.

The other special memories I will always carry with me are the HUC-JIR Rabbinic Ordination when I represented Women of Reform Judaism. The WRJ Board Meetings and District Presidents Council were so informative and a way for our district to stay on top of what has been happening in WRJ Land. In our district our Kallah was outstanding and I look forward to our 2014 Convention in Columbus, when I become the Immediate Past President.

Lastly, I want to thank the WRJ Central District Executive Committee for giving me loads of support and working so well together. I have made dear friends that I would not have known if I hadn't become involved with WRJ and the district. These women are the cream of the crop. They have so much to offer to WRJ, our district and to all the sisterhoods in our district. I know that the executive committee and board will do fantastic things for our district, because we have great leadership. If you are thinking of how you can help your sisterhood, go for it, but keep in mind that the district and WRJ need your expertise, also.

GET INVOLVED! IT WILL BE A GREAT EXPERIENCE!

President

WRJ Central District

A Summary of the Central District, 2012-2014

It all started with the Installation. Our women jumped right into their training sessions. Our board members were thrilled to take on new responsibilities in our district.

56 of our women attended the Fried Leadership Conference in Cincinnati the winter of 2013.

We celebrated WRJ's Centennial in March, 2013 with sisterhoods using the WRJ Shabbat Services. Many of us had celebrations during 2013. We shared all the accomplishments of WRJ in its first 100 years.

We had our Executive Committee meetings in Columbus in the Spring and Fall of 2013 and at our Kallah in the Spring of 2014 at Goldman Union Camp Institute near Indianapolis. Everyone who attended will remember the great weekend we had, because Sandy Adland, our First Vice President provided us with a true camp experience.

In December of 2014, many of us attended the WRJ Assembly in San Diego, California.

We are happy to welcome the Temple Israel Sisterhood of Canton, Ohio. They were a founding sisterhood of WRJ and have decided to affiliate once again.

Thank you to all Area Directors. They are the women who are our link to the local sisterhoods. We believe that they have the most important position in the district. They offer suggestions when needed. They offer an ear to hear about the goings-on in the local sisterhood. And they report to the district about all the wonderful activities in the sisterhoods. They try to be the sisterhood presidents' best friend.

Thank you to the three vice presidents who have worked behind the scenes to keep our district running so well.

Thank you to our Executive Committee which has done all that was asked of them.

Thank you to our six chairs who had specific, but very vital positions on our board.

Thank you to the local sisterhood presidents and their sisterhoods for making Central District shine. The district takes pride in all you do.

Now, we look forward to a new administration. The Nominating Committee did a terrific job of bringing some dynamic women to our board for the next term, 2014-2016.
